I get a text message from my sister-in-law a couple weeks ago out of the blue:
SIL - "Have you heard about the book fifty shades of grey?"
Me - "No., what's it about?"
SIL - "It's about sex, lust, desire..."
Sex, lust, desire? Well, sounds up my ally.
I proceed to Google "Fifty Shades of Grey"..."mommy-porn" is a recurring adjective. Mommy-porn, huh? BDSM themes in a mainstream novel? Intrigued....I like it already! I proceed to check Amazon for the reviews. Yep...this sounds intriguing...moments later the trilogy is purchased, paying more than I ever had for paperback books. I sure hope these are good and can share them with my sisters who are usually up to a good read now and then.
When the smiling box from Amazon arrives, another sister is drooling wanting to read them. I decide that I should probably go ahead and let her borrow the books first, as 1) I am about 3/4 through the final Hunger Games book, Mockingjay, and 2) I have house guests arriving the next night for a little over a week. She reads fast and will surely be done when my guests leave and my sleepless nights return. In the days to follow, I am being updated with texts from my sisters about how I am going to LOVE this book and how it is just impossible to put down. By Friday, I have finished Mockingjay just in time for Fifty Shades of Grey to be back in my hands.
I started this book knowing that if my sisters-in-law loved it, so would I. We have similar tastes in books. We were all sucked in by the Twilight and Hunger Games series.
My expectations were high...and I was not disappointed. I finished the book over the course of four nights, staying up way beyond a reasonable bed time for a working mom. Oh my! Intense! I want more! But...as it is a trilogy, I must now wait for my sister to finish book two, Fifty Shades Darker, so my obsession can continue. She assures me that book two does not disappoint. At last status, she has about 50 pages to go so, I'm thinking Mr. Grey and I will meet again by this weekend, perhaps even tomorrow night.
Notes for the adult Twilight Fans ~ The intense relationship between Anastasia Steel and Christian Grey is reminiscent of Bella and Edward..only in a dark and deeply sexual way. In fact, the formula of the story line is remarkably similar, average, innocent young girl + insanely handsome and mysterious man who is unavailable to everyone but her. Unbeknown to me at the time I starting reading the book is that is began as Twilight fan fiction. Explains a lot. With that said...do not think if you hated Twilight, you will hate Fifty Shades of Grey...it is laced with the sexuality that Twilight lacked and the characters are must more intelligent.
I am not a reader, but.......after reading your post, I may have to be put on the list to borrow this book! =-)
